Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto says a new unit of 11 officers has changed behavior in the Carson Street entertainment district. Several South Side business owners say Scirotto is right. In response to increasing crime and violence, a crackdown started in July. In the six months that followed, enhanced patrols from Thursday through Sunday racked up 95 arrests.
The crimes included: aggravated assault, drug and gun offenses, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.
In addition, officers wrote more than 1,000 citations.
Urinating in public, being drunk and smoking marijuana are no longer tolerated.
Business owners can now text the police sergeant heading the South Side unit about issues and problems.
We congratulate Chief Scirotto and the officers restoring order on the South Side and say the patrols should continue… for some time to come.
