Post-Gazette newsroom workers go on strike

Shelby Cassesse

Newsroom workers at the Post-Gazette are on strike, following the paper's production department, which went on strike earlier this month.

In a release, the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh said it sent a notice to the paper's management with a list of its demands, including that they end the impasse to contract negotiations and return to the bargaining table.

Alex McCann is a digital editor at the paper, "A lot of the great reporting, the great photography, the great editing that boosts all of that is going to go away, and we hate that."

They also stated that they have suffered hostile and illegal treatment by the paper's owners.

"We believe very strongly that withholding our work is going to show the ownership just how valuable we are and, in that sense, will bring them back to the negotiating table to help us reach a contract that is fair." adds McCann.

The two sides have been at odds since 2017, when negotiations for a new contract began.

"We haven't had a raise, we tell people that and their eyes roll because nobody treats their employees like that. It reached a point where we have to do something and this is the last best thing we can do," says reporter Ed Blazina.

Post-Gazette ownership has not responded to a request for comment.
