
Serra Catholic High School is closed the rest of the week after one of their students was killed in a crash Wednesday.
KDKA Radio spoke to a woman who jumped in to help.
Jess McCauley and her husband were taking their son to school Wednesday morning.
As they crossed the Mansfield Bridge, the saw the crash between a Serra Catholic School van and a car that had occurred moments prior.
“I yelled, I said, ‘it’s a school bus’ and [my husband] pulled over so fast and we both didn’t even think, we just ran and the kids were laying there, the car was on fire, it was just devastating,” said McCauley.
15-year-old Samantha Kalkbrenner died at the scene.
She was a sophomore at Serra Catholic, Facebook posts painting her as an advanced dancer and cheerleader who always had a smile.
Classes and extracurriculars are canceled at Serra Catholic through Sunday. A prayer vigil is scheduled for 7:00 tonight.
"Our Lady of Sorrows, Pray for Us," Serra Catholic posted on Facebook.
Three other kids were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were last listed in critical condition.
