Those who looked up toward Mount Washington on Wednesday saw an update to the iconic billboard that sits atop the hill.
The Pittsburgh Brewing Company changed the billboard from I.C. Light back to a new and refreshed Iron City Beer logo.
“There is a rich history between Iron City and this Lamar billboard,” a release from Pittsburgh Brewing said.
Iron City began advertising on the billboard in 1938 through the mid-1950s, returning in 2020.
Last July, Pittsburgh Brewing changed the advertising to I.C. Light for the rest of the Pirates season and kept it up through football season to highlight “the connection between I.C Light and Pittsburgh sports, especially the Steelers and Pirates. The billboard's visibility from both stadiums accentuates the connection to I.C Light and its significance to Pittsburgh sports and these teams.”
The refreshed Iron City’s goal, according to Pittsburgh Brewing is to emphasize “the importance of both this billboard and brand, signifying the relationship between the city of Pittsburgh and Iron City beer, and the evolving connection throughout the years.”
Between the 1950s and 2020, electronic signs sponsored by Alcoa and Bayer could be seen from places like Three Rivers Stadium.
