Rodents, roaches and other violations close Pittsburgh eatery

A restaurant in Squirrel Hill has been ordered closed by the Allegheny County Health Department after 17 violations (five high-risk) during a recent inspection.

Tan Lac Vien Vietnamese restaurant on Murray Avenue was ordered to close after an inspection last week.

A case of vegetables was found with rodent droppings on “many, if not all, of the individual” radishes in the case. The entire case was thrown away during the inspection.
Rodent droppings were found in several other areas as well. Live roaches were found in several places including in a drinking glass and on a food contact surface.

Several items in a prep cooler and cooler in the basement measured at temperatures that were above the safe temp of 41 degrees or lower, including beans measured at 50F and noodles in water in soy sauce bucket at 68F.

No handwashing or soap was observed in the kitchen. Inspectors were told employees wash their hands in the bathroom and no were else. Employees must wash hand before beginning work and when returning to work.

Dried food was found on food prep items, bamboo skewers were found with rodent droppings on them and three knives were found stored between a pipe and a wall.

An “imminent hazard” of “fluid from an unknown source, seeping through he basement walls and onto the food preparation area floors”, (a repeat violation) was also reported.
