The Sports & Exhibition Authority is looking into professional basketball in Pittsburgh.
Last week, the SEA board approved a study to see if the city should invest in an NBA or WNBA team.
The study will see if there is demand for a pro basketball team in the Pittsburgh area, what the economic benefits would be, what it would cost and a look at “comparable lease terms at current league franchise cities.”
During questioning, it was said that only an NBA or WNBA franchise is being studied.
In the 70s Pittsburgh had an ABA team that had two names: Pipers and Condors.
In 1994, a semi-pro Continental Basketball Association team played for the CBA Championship.
The Pittsburgh Piranhas lost and only lasted one season in the area.
