The people who evacuated Second Avenue Commons won't be returning anytime soon.
An update from the county's Department of Human Services says it could take several months for the shelter to fully reopen.
The release says damage varies in the building but restoration and rehab work may allow sections of the shelter to reopen sooner rather than later.
“The fire at Second Avenue Commons created an unprecedented crisis,” said County Department of Human Services Director Erin Dalton in a statement. “We want to thank Mayor Gainey for declaring an emergency for the building, which has allowed us to move faster and provided additional flexibility in finding new emergency shelter locations. We also want to thank all of the partners and elected officials who have stepped up to support the staff and Second Avenue Commons guests and residents in the relocation effort.”
Regarding the people staying at an emergency shelter in the David L Lawrence Convention Center, Light of Life, Community Human Services and other organizations have offered around three dozen beds, leaving the county to find shelter for 100 people.
Officials have so far looked at more than 100 potential locations.
For now, they will move this weekend from the Convention Center to the Family Links facility on Climax Street in Allentown.
