Current high school students weren't born yet on Sept. 11, 2001, but the impact of that day transcends generations.

That was clear at Seneca Valley High School Friday, where JROTC members hosted a ceremony to commemorate 20 years since the attacks.

Sophomore cadet Logan Randall said they do the ceremony each year.

"We believe that's our civic duty as Americans that we must never forget what happened on Sept. 11," he said.

Students read remarks to honor the victims and first responders, raised an American flag and played Taps.

"We know our parents went through it. We know adults in our lives went through it," said junior cadet Gracen Heilman. "Even though we weren't born to witness it, we still want to do all that we can to be as close to it as possible."

The ceremony was one of several commemoration events across the district Friday.

Staff at Haine Middle School decorated the building with American flags and banners. Students will also make a video to send to local families and first responders.

Students at Ryan Gloyer Middle School were encouraged to wear red, white and blue to school. Social studies teachers also planned to give a lesson focused on the attacks.
