The Shell Polymers Plant in Monaca has released a statement after those living near the plant may have heard a loud noise and saw flaring coming from the complex.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Shell says that around 10 p.m. on Tuesday a ground flare was active after a compressor trip.

They say that caused the noise that residents may have heard.

“Over the next few nights, you may see a glow from our ground flare as hydrocarbons are reintroduced into the system,” part of the post said.

“Flares are utilized as a safe way to combust hydrocarbon gases to protect the community, our employees and the environment,” the company added.

This comes a month after a malfunction at the plant led to high flaring.

The Department of Environmental Protection told Shell in December that flaring needed to be minimized after other incidents.

The plant has been hit with four violations since opening late last year.
