Fire crews were called twice to same home in Carrick Tuesday morning.
Flames broke out around 1:15 a.m. at a home in the 100 block of West Cherryhill Street.
About four hours later the fire department returned when the fire rekindled.
And in Washington County, firefighters were sent around 5:30 this morning to a home in the 1200 block of McKean Avenue in Donora.
Damage to the house is considerable.
At least seven people have been killed in fires in the Pittsburgh region this month. One firefighter says the tragedies demonstrate the need to have working smoke detectors in your home.
Bill Silay of the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department says firefighters will even help to install detectors.
Other things you can do to keep your home safe:
Make sure your furnace is working properly.
Have it inspected if possible and make sure you are changing the air filter on a regular basis. Most smaller filters need to be changed every three months, but each one is different.
If you use a fireplace, make sure it gets undergoes maintenance and is cleaned properly.
DO NOT plug space heaters into an extension cord!!!! And, do not leave space heaters unattended.
Also, watch what's on your stove. Silay says there was a fire last summer that was caused when someone left pizza boxes on the stove, and a cat accidentally turned the burner on, causing a fire.
