The Smithfield Street Bridge is undergoing an $8 million renovation that is scheduled to last for two years.

The bridge will be open during a majority of the work but traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction.

One sidewalk at a time will also be closed; at the moment, that's the upriver side.

According to PennDOT, the project aims to address the structural deficiencies and preserve the functional integrity.

Among the improvements coming from the project are repairs to present deficiencies, replacing sidewalks, and power washing for rust and other waste.
