Does the Pittsburgh Public School District have a problem with excessive teacher absenteeism?
Community data indicating between 10 to 20 percent of its teachers are calling off every school day.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Wayne Walters telling Marty Griffin on KDKA that those numbers may be disheartening, but he remains hopeful.
“Being a teacher is a challenging job and so the more that we can get the support for teachers to really feel good and feel strong and have those supports, I think we’ll some decline in those types of things,” said Dr. Walter. “Like every other profession, they’re human so they do get sick, they do have family dynamics that they’re taking care of so, you know we do have those challenges just like in every other job market, it’s just pronounced when we’re serving children.”
Pittsburgh Public Schools has an established Attendance Improvement Program that tracks illness and unexcused absences.
