Deputies arrested a man Tuesday night accused of leaving three dogs in a home he was evicted from last week.

Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus told KDKA's Rob Pratte deputies sent to the East Deer Township house rented by 30-year-old Christopher Edmunds said there was no sign of him, but there were two Rottweilers and a large white dog.

“It was clear that there was nobody in the house and in order for us to make entry and secure the house, we had to secure the dogs and it was clear that they were abandoned and left to die,” said Sheriff Kraus.

The dogs were not aggressive toward officers and there was no water available for them, with food scattered around the house.

The animals were taken to shelters and Edmunds is facing misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and neglect of animals.

One of the dogs was taken to Animal Friends and the two others were taken to Big Easy Dog Daze in Lawrenceville.

“I want to commend the action of my deputies and the quick response of Animal Friends and Big Easy Dog Daze,” said Kraus. “Without the coordinated effort it is almost certain that these three dogs would not be alive today. Hopefully, the caring and safe environment the dogs now find themselves in will lead to a quick recovery for all three."
