Today in Pittsburgh history: the Fort Pitt Tunnel was opened.
At 11 a.m. on September 1st, 1960, the first car drove through.
Pittsburgh Magazine's Rich Cook talked about it on the Big K Morning Show:
"Seated inside the car in the middle row passenger side was Mayor Joseph Barr and right behind him, waving his hat was Governor David L. Lawrence, one of the major architects of Pittsburgh's first renaissance"
The tunnel cost $17 million to build that year, which is equivalent to $168 million in 2022.
