Today marks one year since we first saw the television images of people standing in long lines at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in Duquesne.
So it's quite appropriate that the 2nd annual Feed the Need radiothon is being held today. Entercom Pittsburgh and Giant Eagle and are teaming up to host the event.
The Food Bank's Brian Gulish was a guest on the News Radio KDKA morning show. "That number's now 370-thousand individuals. That includes 57% of children", he tells Larry and Kevin. He says, "They're food insecure. They don't have adequate amounts of food. They don't necessarily know when they're going to get their next meal."
Last year we helped to raise 1.6-million meals for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank but food insecurity is up 43 percent higher than it was last year. What is our goal today? This is what Giant Eagle spokeswoman Janna Jablonowski said to Larry and Kevin.
"So this year we're aiming to fund 100-thousand meals to displaced workers who are utilizing emergency drive-up distribution sites and other food pantries", she says.
And if you'd like to help, just Text NEED to 50155. The Feed the Need Radiothon started at 5 this morning and will continue until 6:00 this evening.
