While Pittsburgh has plenty to offer to tourists, one thing missing is an observation deck in its Downtown area.
Chicago has the Willis Tower and Seattle has the Space Needle, just to name a few around the country.
Pittsburgh native Jeremy Goldman is working to make the top of the U.S. Steel Tower the latest tall observation deck in the country.
The roof of the Steel Building, which used to be a helipad for the Steel executives, would be converted into an observation deck.
Goldman tells KDKA Radio’s Colin Dunlap, while a trip to Mount Washington is fun, the Steel building is in the middle of the city and “twice as tall”.
“It’s almost like looking at something versus being in the middle of something,” said Goldman.
In addition to being up 841 feet from the ground, Goldman says part of the experience will be the journey to the top floor will be seeing the “old engineering floor” and the other innerworkings of the tower.
When the top of the building was used as a helipad, up to three helicopters could land at the same time, with the area taking up over an acre.
“It’s the largest-highest rooftop space in the world,” said Goldman. “There’s no other building higher that has a larger rooftop,” said Goldman
The plan is to have two levels to the observation area when it opens.
Goldman says they’re currently in negotiations to lease the top floors and are working to raise the initial fund that it will take to build. You can invest in that here.
The goal is to have the “Top of the Triangle” up and operating by the NFL Draft, in April 2026.
Goldman says the average price for someone to experience the observation deck is $30.
