Two people were injured in an explosion Tuesday morning in McKeesport.

It happened around 8 a.m. where the YWCA used to be in the 400 block of 9th Street.

Witnesses say they heard a loud blast at the same time two people were installing a handicapped ramp.

The two contractors working on the ramp transported to trauma centers for treatment; their status is unknown.

"We are keeping these individuals and their families in our prayers at this time," Mayor Michael Cherepko told reporters on scene.

The building is owned by the city of McKeesport and is home to multiple companies and offices, including Penn State University Greater Allegheny.

In a statement from the university, none of their employees or clients were in the building at the time of the explosion.

Mayor Cherepko says that the tenants of the building have been contacted.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal's office are investigating the explosion and are evaluations are underway on the structural integrity of the building.
