NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, along with Steelers President Art Rooney, and city leaders, inaugurated a new community athletic field at Hazelwood Green Wednesday morning.

The U. S. Steel Community Field at Hazelwood Green, situated on the Hazelwood Green development site right along the Monongahela River.

Goodell says the new field is designed to be a community-focused recreational space for local youth, one that provides a modern home for local sports teams, like the Hazelwood Cobras.

“This is a perfect way to start the draft week, it’s celebrating football,” said Goodell. “There’s nothing better than watching kids be able to participate in sports, to compete, to learn so many valuable lessons . . . and that’s what it’s all about.”

“Football has always been more than a game in Western Pennsylvania — it’s part of the fabric of our communities,” said Art Rooney, II President of Steelers Charities. “The field allows us to honor generations of families who built this region’s football tradition and carry that spirit forward across the wide variety of sports that will be played on this new field. We are proud to help create a place where youth from Hazelwood and across all of Pittsburgh can learn, grow, and experience the confidence, pride and belonging that come from playing team sports.”

The facility was funded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation and developed by Steelers Charities.
