UPMC President and CEO Leslie Davis joined civic leaders Tuesday morning in breaking ground for a new 17-story UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Oakland.
The new hospital at Fifth Ave. and De Soto St. will have more than 630 private patient rooms. One of its featured services will be organ transplants, heart surgery and neurosurgery.
"This new building – the largest health care building in Pittsburgh's history – will serve the community for generations to come by dramatically changing the landscape of the Oakland neighborhood, Pittsburgh and Allegheny County," said Davis.
"But it's so much more than a building. It's the beating heart of Life Changing Medicine — something only UPMC can deliver locally, regionally and globally."

This is UPMC's second-major project to start construction since its big project announcement several years ago. The UPMC Mercy Pavilion is set to treat patients in the Spring of 2023.
UPMC Presbyterian will be completed in 2026.
