One of the largest healthcare providers in Pennsylvania made a major announcement Friday.
UPMC Senior Vice President Tami Minnier announced on the Marty Griffin Show the introduction of an in-house travel staffing agency while talking about the shortages of nurses in today's climate.
"We are always thinking at UPMC about how to solve some of the pressing issues in healthcare," said Minnier. "There is none more pressing than this one right now."
Initially, it will be for registered nurses and surgical technologists.
"It's a way to keep our nurses and really to recruit nurses to UPMC and really, hopefully, bring them back who have left our system." Minnier explained.
Since the start of the pandemic and as demand for nurses increased, the rates travel staffing agencies charge hospitals have doubled. The in-house program allows UPMC to hire two nurses for the price an agency charges for one.
