Violence in Homewood seeing a decline over the past year

The City of Pittsburgh says they're seeing results after prioritizing violence reduction in Homewood.

Homewood became the focus at the start of the year after city data showed it had the most gun violence deaths of any city neighborhood.

Lisa Frank, from Mayor Ed Gainey's office said, they've seen a 10 percent reduction in violence in Homewood compared to last year.

"We're hopeful about that, we're going to keep our feet on the gas with new strategies to keep people safe, to help people have hope, to intervene."

At a Homewood community meeting Tuesday, Frank also said the city is actively recruiting police officers.

That includes getting rid of a requirement that candidates have 60 college credits before joining the force.

"People can get their education as you go, some of your work in the academy will count towards that."

This is due to an "All in" initiative that has taken place by Mayor Gainey and his administration in Homewood.

The initiative has also seen Homewood receive more lighting, cleaned overgrowth, safer sidewalks and streets, and traffic-calming measures.

There are also plans for a community center, pool, football, and baseball field with construction set to be starting up next year.
