A major grocery chain is one step closer to opening its first store in the Pittsburgh area.

Wegmans Food Markets has officially purchased land in Cranberry Township, locking in plans for its first local store.

The Pittsburgh Business Times reports the company paid just over $14 million for a 13-acre site at Cranberry Springs, where a 115,000-square-foot store is planned.

Officials say site work is already underway, with construction expected later this year.

The store is still projected to open in 2027 and could bring between 400 and 500 jobs to the region.

It was reported last week that Wegmans could be eyeing a second location in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh.
