It happens to all motorists, sooner or later. If you're pulled over by a police officer, what should you do? What shouldn't you do to stay safe and keep out of trouble?

Magisterial District Judge Tom Swan in Hampton, Richland and West Deer Townships was asked this question by Larry and Kevin on the Newsradio KDKA morning show.

"First of all, you listen", he says. "Do what the police officer says. You pull over and listen. If they tell you to put the car in park, turn the car off, whatever it is, you listen and obey them, because that's the easiest way to stay out of trouble. Once you start confronting them, issues can arise".

And his other piece of advice for those who are pulled over by a cop?

"Don't question why you were stopped. Just listen to him. Your day in court is not out on the road. That's not the judge. That's not the prosecutor. That's not your attorney there. That is a police officer who is trying to do his job."

Swan says in most cases where the driver stays calm, obeys the police officer and doesn't confront the officer, the incident will resolve without injury. He says if the officer was wrong, you can always have your day in court.
