This week was especially fun because I was able to reconnect with one of my good friends, Emmy Award winning filmmaker and Pittsburgh Native, Emmai Alaquiva.
Emmai started his career in extremely humbling beginnings. From working at an East Liberty coffee shop and lounge to becoming the production director for the original WAMO to owning his own production studio and now, becoming the CEO of Ya Momz House which has helped bring forth so many amazing projects.
Behind the lenses, Emmai directed documentaries, short films, music videos, shot photos for big name celebrities like Jerome Bettis, The Roots, the late Dr. Maya Angelou and Congressman John Lewis.
Recently he directed and produced a Poetry Unplugged series for the August Wilson Cultural Center, featuring the great Nikki Giovanni.
He also helped create a music led workshop for young people called Hip Hop On L.O.C.K. and Emmai explains what that is and how your child can participate. It's a program that provides a platform that helps them embrace their artistic souls through music writing, producing, and DJing. It's an amazing program.
And there's more! So much more!
