Sick leave: Why would council vote for something they can't change?

The debate over paid sick leave continues in Allegheny County.

Earlier this month, council members passed a bill that would require all businesses operating within the county to give employees one hour of paid sick leave for every 35 hours worked.

However, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald vetoed it after attorneys advised that council had overstepped its authority and has to legal right to make such demands on businesses, which could result in costly and lengthy lawsuits.

Still, some council members wanted to push forward. Nick Futules did not.

"It was spelled out for us three or four times, and they still tried to do it the wrong way. I'm disappointed. There are three seated members of our council that are attorney's, they know the law, and yet they voted to override it as well," Futules said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show.Fitzgerald says he'll ask the Health Department to take up the issue instead.
