Winter solstice means days start getting longer

The winter solstice, the precise moment when the Sun appears farthest south in the sky, happens tonight at 10:21.

With December's mild conditions, including a Christmas Day high in the upper 50s, AccuWeather's Joe Lundberg says we'll be waiting for below freezing conditions.

“The coldest days are usually reserved for late January as it just takes a while for that cold air to build up in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere,” said Lundberg.

The solstice is usually on the 21st with the occasional exception, but the timing jumps around each year.

Sometimes it's in the morning, other in the afternoon or at night.

The good news, daylight will start getting longer and longer each passing day.
