Thursday night’s snowfall is expected to create slick road conditions as commuters head home.

It may not be a big winter storm, but AccuWeather Meteorologist Matt Benz told NewsRadio KDKA’s Shelby Cassesse to be mindful of the expected slick spots on the roadways leading into Friday morning.

“With a total snow accumulation of 1-to-3 inches across much of greater Pittsburgh, that will lead to slippery conditions throughout tonight. Even though the snow is coming to an end by tomorrow morning, still looking at some slick spots out there with lingering flurries through tomorrow morning.”

It’s been a slow winter start, with temperatures higher than usual and little snowfall. The National Weather Service says the Pittsburgh area got .7 inches of snow in December, one of the lowest accumulations for the month on record.

Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works considers .5-to-3 inches of snow a Level 1 storm, meaning standard salt crews will salt and plow as needed.
