The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is welcoming the second gorilla born this year.

Bo, a boy, was born on May 11.

The zoo says both Bo and his mother, Moka, are doing well.

A female gorilla, Charlotte, was born on Valentine’s Day this year.

While the zoo usually has a naming contest for its newborns, the staff named Bo after his late grandfather, Mimbo, who was at the zoo until 2005.

Gorillas are a “critically endangered” species.

Visitors to the zoo can see Bo but shouldn’t expect to see him interacting with Charlotte as they are spending time with their immediate families.

The zoo now has eight gorillas that are part of two “distinct gorilla troops who rotate though indoor, outdoor and behind-the-scenes areas at various times.”

Bo is part of a family with his brothers Frank and Ivan, Moka and his silverback father, Mrithi.

Charlotte is with her mom Ibo and “paternal figure” Harry.

“Troops in the wild typically consist of one silverback male, females, and offspring, so this became a natural arrangement,” explains Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium Curator of Mammals, Kelsey Forbes. “The two groups do have constant visual access to one another, which allows both infants to see the other family members. Both troops are doing great.”

Along with Bo and Charlotte, more babies were born at the zoo this year so far.

Twin Amur leopard cubs were born in March, three nyalas were born in February, March and April.
