Crews from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi apprehended boats carrying 600 pounds of illegally-caught red snapper and two sharks off the coast of Texas last Friday.

According to the Coast Guard, Station South Padre Island boat crews and a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi aircrew worked to detain two lanchas, or motorboats.

“The crews seized the lanchas carrying high flyers, GPS devices, radios, fishing gear, two sharks and a combined 600 pounds of red snapper,” said a Facebook post. They were around 8 miles north of the Maritime Boundary Line, per the Coast Guard.

After the lanchas were seized, the Coast Guard transferred eight men identified as “Mexican fishermen” to U.S. Border Patrol for processing.

“Illegal, unreported, unregulated fishing is a multi-faceted problem that affects human rights, food security and maritime security,” said Lt. j.g. David Guerreiro, operational unit controller, Sector Corpus Christi. “We will continue to coordinate our efforts with state and federal agencies to put a stop to illegal poaching and preserve our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.”
