Police are investigating after a Marine was killed in an apparent homicide at North Carolina's Camp Lejeune on Wednesday night.
A second Marine is now being held on suspicion of being involved.
Base authorities released a statement calling the death a homicide and describing the other Marine as a suspect.
Officials said the death occurred in the barracks but they didn't provide any other details, including how the victim died.
"At approximately 10:15 p.m. this evening, base law enforcement authorities apprehended a Marine suspected of involvement in the death of another Marine," the statement said. "The incident occurred in an on-base barracks room earlier this evening. Further details will be provided as they become available."
The death came just two days before the military base conducts its annual Exercise Urgent Response, "which provides realistic training opportunities meant to increase the installation’s emergency response efforts, command and control, and security capabilities."
The investigation is not expected to impact the exercise.
Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile military training facility in Jacksonville, North Carolina near the Atlantic coast. The base and surrounding community is home to an active duty, dependent, retiree and civilian employee population of approximately 170,000 people.
