The legendary Szechuan Sauce will be returning to the menu for a limited-time only starting March 31.
It will be available exclusively on the McDonald’s App while supplies last.
The Szechaun sauce has become a fan-favorite for its sweet and savory flavor profile. With hints of soy, garlic, ginger, and mild vinegar, it’s perfect for dipping your nuggets or fries.
You can get the sauce for free to accompany any order of Chicken McNuggets, or, if you want to stock up for the future, you can purchase up to 5 a la carte packets on the app.
To add even more excitement, McDonald’s is releasing the dipping sauce in limited-edition, golden foil packets with five different designs that spell out “Szechuan” for customers who want to collect them all.
McDonald’s revealed the news via a press release by simply writing: "Szechuan. Sauce. Is. Coming. Back. In. Just. Ten. Days…i repeat we're dropping Szechuan Sauce nationwide exclusively on the McDonald's Apps next week!!"
A few days prior, the official McDonald’s social media accounts began dropping hints that something exciting was on the horizon. Customers who texted a cryptic phone number posted on social accounts and a Times Square billboard got hints about the drop before the midnight press release went live.
Fast food fans have been waiting for this moment for years as it’s only the fourth time the sauce has reappeared on the menu since it was first launched in 1998 as part of a promotional tie-in for Disney’s “Mulan.”
But it wasn’t until the condiment was referenced in an episode of “Rick and Morty” in April 2017 that it developed a cult following. The buzz from the episode prompted McDonald’s to revive the sauce for a one-day only promotion to appease the animated show’s passionate fanbase.
