(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Anyone trying to visit McDonald's world headquarters in the West Loop might not find many people in the building.

The company has reportedly ordered corporate employees -- including most of the 2,000 people who work in Chicago -- to work from home for the next few days, ahead of an expected announcement about layoffs.

McDonald’s is in the process of restructuring, and the Wall Street Journal reports the company sent an email to corporate staff in the U.S.
and some locations overseas to cancel all in-person meetings. Employees were told to work from home as the company notifies everyone about their job status.

The company declined comment Monday, The Associated Press reported.

Job consultant Rick Cobb of 2-Discern in Chicago says it’s the only practical way for the fast-food giant to make the move.

“When you’re talking about somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 people, depending on who’s going to be impacted, the logistics and the complexity of that make it really almost impossible,” Cobb said.

McDonald's shares rose 1% Monday. Its revenue was flat at $23.2 billion for the full year in 2022, but its net income fell 18%, partly due to the sale of its business in Russia, the AP reported.
