According to authorities, a mother has been arrested for allegedly allowing her son to get a tattoo at the age of 10. Police found out when the boy asked his school nurse for Vaseline to put on it.

Crystal Thomas, 33, of Highland, New York, was arrested in October, according to a report from The New York Times. Since her arrest, she has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Mid Hudson News.

Police alleged that Thomas let her son get a rendering of his name in large block letters tattooed on his forearm. The artist who did the tattoo, 20-year-old Austin Smith, has also been taken into custody.

New York state law requires someone to be at least 18 years of age before they can get a tattoo. Thomas said in court that he supports the age restriction and that the incident was only a misunderstanding.

Thomas claims that she thought it would only be temporary, saying, “no little child should get tattooed.

The tattoo artist said during an arraignment hearing that he regrets doing the tattoo. He has been charged with dealing unlawfully with a child.

“It’s the worst mistake I’ve made in my life,” Smith said, the Times reported. “At the time, I thought if you got your parents’ permission, you could get a tattoo.”
