A family in New Jersey had to check their insurance on Monday afternoon to see if it covered meteorite damage after a space rock slammed through their roof.
The Hopewell Police Department released a statement on the incident, saying that the family had a “metallic object believed to be a meteorite” hit the roof of their ranch-style home. Thankfully, the rock did not harm anyone inside.
Police shared that the object was oblong and about four inches by six inches. They said it went through the roof and the ceiling before it “impacted the hardwood floor,” coming to a rest and leaving a crack.
Police shared a photo of the rock next to the damaged floor board.
While it is believed to be a meteorite, police aren’t certain, and the department shared it has reached out to “several other agencies” to determine what it is and where it came from.
“This may be related to a current Meteor shower called the Eta Aquarids,” the department shared. “The investigation is on-going.”
