New study says gardening could help you live longer

Are you a gardener? Here's a reason why you may want to pick up the hobby if you're not.

Researchers in Colorado found people who participate in community gardening eat more fiber and get more physical activity, two ways to reduce the risk of cancer and chronic diseases.

Doug Oster, Pittsburgh's garden guru and host of the Organic Gardener Radio Show, Sunday Mornings on NewsRadio KDKA, says that this study only confirms what we already know, that gardening is good for you.

"Looking at that study, things like exercise and eating more fibrous things, that's all those vegetables that we're pulling from the garden," explains Oster. "Not only are they filled with fiber, they are super nutritious when you're growing them yourself."

He says gardeners also report less stress and anxiety,

"In our world, our fast-paced crazy world, there's something about being in that garden, about getting your hands dirty that is just so therapeutic."

Oster says the #1 rule in gardening is: leave your phone inside the house.
