Scientists at the Australian Museum reported they’ve discovered a new species of spider, and it’s so deadly that just one bite is all it takes to kill a fully-grown adult human.
Atrax christenseni falls into the category of funnel-web spiders, but it’s a supercharged version – larger and much more venomous than their brethren.
It’s been given the nickname “Big Boy” by scientists.
Luckily, normal, run-of-the-mill funnel-web spider antivenom works just as well for bites from Big Boy as it does for venom from its smaller counterparts, lead researcher Stephanie Loria told CBS News.
They do require medical attention though.
“While funnel-web bites are the most severe among spiders, they are not very common. If you are bitten by a funnel-web spider, call an ambulance and go straight to hospital,” toxicologist Geoff Isbister of the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital told The Independent.
