In June of 2022, Keith first revealed his diagnosis, sharing "Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer,” in a statement. “I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”
Tuesday morning, his family shared across his site and socials that the Country star had passed. "Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5, surrounded by his family,” the post read. “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”
In December of 2023, the "Beer For My Horses" singer told Audacy's Katie Neal that he felt he "turned a corner" in his stomach cancer battle. “I’m doing really good. It’s been a tough two years, but I think I’m turning a corner,” he shared. “I don’t know if you’re ever done with it [cancer], but I’m trying to be.”
Keith made his first return to the stage at the People’s Choice Country Awards in September. Not only did he steal the show with his tear-jerking performance, he was also honored with the night’s Country Icon Award.
The Country star released his self-titled debut in 1993, and recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of "Should've Been A Cowboy," the most played Country song of the 90s. He notched 20 number one hits across his career and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2021.
