A hotel maid in Las Vegas has been taken into custody for theft, and the price tag on the goods she’s alleged to have taken is eye-popping.
Amanda Melendez, 28, has been charged in the theft of over $1 million in expensive goods stolen from rooms at MGM Resorts.
The theft was reported to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on May 7. Three men staying at MGM Resorts had requested maid service and returned to find the room tossed.
Beds were half-made, cleaning supplies were left behind, and their bags were inside-out with valuables missing, according to police.
Among the items reported stolen: Two Rolex watches, an Audemars Piguet watch, a Cartier watch, seven diamond Cuban link chains, a couple of bracelets and a gold ring.
The men told police they had been diligent about hiding their valuables before they left the room.
Melendez was the housekeeper of record for the men’s room that night, and another guest of the hotel on her route reported $300 in cash missing.
The investigation uncovered a recorded phone conversation between Melendez and a prison inmate in which she relayed that one of the rooms she had been cleaning had expensive valuables, and she listed in particular some of the items taken from the men’s room.
During the call, the inmate told her to steal the valuables and escape in a ride-share.
Melendez has been charged with suspicion of grand larceny, burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary. She is currently out on bail.
