PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An officer who was struck by a car while trying to help a stranded driver in Mercer County, New Jersey has been released from the hospital.
The moment, which was caught on dashcam video, emphasizes yet another reason to move over and slow down when there’s an emergency or disabled vehicle on the road.
Saturday night along Route 130 in Robbinsville Township, Patrolman Connor Boyle was standing next to the driver’s side of a vehicle and in front of his patrol car when a Volkswagon Passat side-swiped the cruiser and hit Boyle. Police said the driver kept going.
Boyle suffered a broken leg, a cut over his eye and a concussion. He was released from the hospital on Monday.
Robbinsville Police Lt. William Swanhart said the incident could have been much worse.
“He’s in great spirits,” Swanhart said of Boyle. “He’s a brave young man. I think he’s incredibly grateful. He actually was out and came back to see his fellow officers, so he’s up and he’s moving and he’s excited to come back.”
The 25-year-old has only been on the force for a year.
Police eventually caught up with the driver, Rachel Glatt. The 52-year-old woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless driving and related offenses.
New Jersey’s Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and move over at least one lane when there is a stopped emergency or service vehicle with its lights on.
