In a statement that stressed patience to the electorate, the White House warned that many of the 2022 mid-term elections may not be decided in the few hours after polls close on Election Day.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre cautioned on Monday that final results could take “a few days” to determine.
Many states, she said, utilize mail-in ballots and other early voting methods that remain uncounted for days. Those ballots do eventually get counted, but the process takes time, and in close elections, they could decide the victor.
“We may not know all the winners of elections for a few days,” Jean-Pierre said during a media briefing. “It takes time to count all legitimate ballots in a legal and orderly manner. That's how this is supposed to work.”
Several races for the U.S. Senate are expected to be tightly contested, including the race between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and former football star Herschel Walker in Georgia and the race for the Pennsylvania seat being fought between the state’s Lt. Gov. John Fetterman and television celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz.
