FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center annual report on elder fraud in 2020 is out and it shows people over the age of 60 in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia lost millions of dollars.
In Western Pennsylvania, the elderly were conned out of $4.5 million in scams in all of 2020 and $1.4 million in West Virginia.
Comparatively, the 2021 totals so far show $2.1 million lost in western PA and $1.3 million West Virginia.
Romance scams, tech support fraud were among the most common between the two states.
Nationwide, the IC3 report shows just under $1 billion in total losses with more than 150,000 fraud victims over the age of 60 - a significant increase since 2015.
