Democrat Dan Goughnour won Tuesday's special election for the Mon Valley's seat in the state House, easily defeating Republican Chuck Davis.
With Goughnour's victory in the 35th District race, Democrats will have a one-seat House majority in Harrisburg.
The special election followed the sudden death of Representative Matthew Gergely.
Goughnour has been a police officer and school board member in McKeesport.
Allegheny-Fayette Central Labor Council President Darrin Kelly released the following statement after Goughnour’s win.
“Our Labor Council congratulates Dan Goughnour on his big win in the HD-35 special election. We thank the many union members and volunteers who brought this home to help keep our Democratic State House Majority, and we look forward to working with Rep.-elect Goughnour. We miss our friend Matt Gergely but we know he is smiling tonight seeing his seat and the State House remaining in pro-union hands.”
