PA and Apple reach $3M settlement on iPhone battery failures

HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — On Wednesday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced a $3 million settlement with Apple Inc.

Apple had been accused of "secretly throttling consumers' iPhone speeds in 2017 to address poor battery performance."

Originally, the lawsuit claimed that Apple knew of prior battery failures and that those issues were leading to phone shutdowns.

In an attempt to curtail the shutdowns, Apple released a software update in 2017 that truncated phone functionality in hopes of decreasing the number of phone collapses.

Slowing the phones down would mean smaller chances of a shutdown.

"Apple knew some of its iPhones had battery issues and instead of disclosing the problem to consumers, it chose to slow down the performance of the devices," Attorney General Shapiro said.

"I called on Apple to make it right and provide transparency to Pennsylvania consumers. This settlement will deliver more accurate information to those who buy and depend on Apple products."

After approval from a court, the $3 million will be awarded to the Office of Attorney General and will go to reimbursements for the investigation and investments for "future public protection and education measures."

As part of the settlement, Apple must truthfully disclose information about phone battery health, power management, and overall performance.

Apple will be required to make acknowledgements of the mentioned statuses on its website, in installation updates, and in the iPhone's user interface.
