HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission announced that they have awarded nearly $2 million in grant money to 155 different museums and historical societies scattered across the commonwealth, landing in 58 total counties.
With the newest disbursements, the Commission's goal is to "strengthen Pennsylvania's museum community by supporting the general operations of eligible museums and official county historical societies that are not supported by other state agency funding programs."
But grant money isn't awarded to just any museum.
There are prerequisites that a location must meet before becoming eligible for a piece of the cash award.
For example, any qualified museum must have an annual operating budget exceeding $100,000.
Each suitable location must also have at least one full-time staff member.
"Pennsylvania's wonderful museums and historical societies continue to preserve and share the state's rich history and culture through the stories they tell," said Governor Tom Wolf. "These funds, awarded to museums and historical societies across the commonwealth, at a time when many of our cultural and historical institutions have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, will help ensure these facilities are able to continue serving as educational resources for all Pennsylvanians."
