PA’s Farmland Preservation Program saved 177 farms in 2020

HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — On Thursday alone, the state announced the protection of 32 farms scattered throughout 17 Pennsylvanian counties, guarding over 2,700 acres of farmland in the process.

In total, Pennsylvania has helped preserve 177 farms in 2020.

Those farms summed over 14,700 acres in the commonwealth.

This help has been a byproduct of both the state and county boards working in conjunction.

In fact, the Bureau of Farmland Preservation director and staff were just recently commended on their efforts to help Pennsylvania farms in a telework-dominated environment.

“The disruptive impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Pennsylvania’s agricultural system have been broad and varied,” Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said. “This year, we’ve watched farmers and consumers bridge the gap from farm to table. Producers and households have depended on each other for certainty, and our state’s Farmland Preservation Program has made food security possible for our families and farmers across the commonwealth.”

Those farms that were helped throughout the year were given protections against “future residential, commercial or industrial development.”
