The 2020 presidential election saw record voter turnout for Pennsylvania, according to the Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar.
Nearly 7 million Pennsylvanians voted by mail or in person, which is reportedly more than in any other presidential election since 1960.
“I am thrilled with the voter engagement and record turnout in this year’s election, which truly reflects the vitality of our democracy,” Secretary Boockvar said. “It is also a powerful credit to Pennsylvania’s dedicated election officials and poll workers, who worked incredibly hard to run a free, fair and secure election with no significant issues while contending with a pandemic, new mail-in ballot procedures and what is apparently the highest voter turnout in commonwealth history.”
According to the state, participation by residents of voting age in this year's election was just under 71%. The previous record in 1960 was just over 70%.
In the 2019 election, turnout was at 61%.
In addition, the Department of State says voter registration exceeded 9 million for the first time.
