Pennsylvania seeing highest number of flu cases in years

Pennsylvania is seeing its highest level of flu cases in years. A quarter of the hospitals in the Commonwealth are at 90 percent capacity.

Pennsylvania is just on the cusp of being classified as Very High flu activity state, while in Allegheny county the activity is being classified as moderate.


In Allegheny County, the health department reports more than 10,000 flu cases so far, compared to over 700 last year.

The entire state is seeing more than 100,000 cases right now, with only Philadelphia reporting more cases than Allegheny.

Many schools and universities have seen the flu circulating their campuses this semester before winter break, which is a big factor in why Pennsylvania is seeing its highest number of cases in 8 years.

Philadelphia public schools have announced that they plan to bring back a mask mandate for a period of 10 days when children return from break, Pittsburgh schools have not said anything on a plan yet.

Dr. Nathan Shively, an infectious-diseases physician at Allegheny Health Network, tells the Post-Gazette it's the earliest start to flu season and the highest number of cases in the county in at least a decade.
