Pennsylvania has 17 million acres of forestlands and state officials are reminding residents to help protect it from wildfires.

“Amid the pandemic we know so many are seeking outdoor pursuits. Fishing, spring turkey hunting, and hiking soon will be popular,” said Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “With dry spring conditions, it takes only a careless moment to ignite a devastating forest fire. We know outdoor burning is the leading cause of wildfires throughout the state and more than 99 percent of Pennsylvania wildfires are caused by people.”

Officials say spring is a dangerous time for wildfires because trees aren't yet full with leaves and direct sunlight and a breeze can dry things out quickly.

Campfires and outdoor cooking in state forest lands may be restricted depending on conditions at the time.

In addition, proerty owners should be aware of weather and conditions before burning outside.

The state has more information about wildfires on their website.
