Overnight snow and sleet have created some slick spots on Pittsburgh area roadways Monday morning.
The winter storm began Sunday morning and we could see snow and sleet continue to fall, on and off, through Tuesday.
Road crews have been working around the clock to stay ahead of the storm.
"Because the snow's been coming down in spurts and not lasting for a very long time, it's been easier for our crews to kinda track and stay on top of it and make sure we're salting the roads as needed," said PennDOT Spokeswoman Yasmeen Manyisha.
She also said they have been on full-callout for more than 24 hours. That's a fleet of 75 trucks with plows and salt in Allegheny County alone.
The city of Pittsburgh has been running 60 crews since Sunday and they've activated their snow plow tracker app so you can check on the current location of plows in your neighborhood. Allegheny County's Public Works has 24 trucks on the road.
Manyisha urges drivers to use caution, especially on side roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Roadways across the region are slick in many spots. Even snow plow drivers were somewhat surprised by Monday morning's wet snow.
One snow plow driver, Craig Gaskins, said his company, which services business contracts in the Greentree area and South Hills, started around midnight and even when they were finishing up Monday morning, they were preparing for more snow to fall throughout the day by putting down extra salt.
This storm is expected to be an extended event, which means just when drivers get a break long enough for the roads to cleared, the snow and sleet are likely to accumulate again.
If you don't have to be on the roads, be safe and just stay home.
