PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He didn’t run away from it, Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he wasn’t good enough leading to a blowout loss, 25-10 in Los Angeles Sunday night.
One of the best quarterbacks in the league through much of the first half of the season, Rodgers was 16-31 for 161 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in LA. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Steelers averaged two yards per pass attempt, before getting a 65-yard drive with the Chargers in prevent defense to pad stats.
“I expect to play great every single week and this was not my best performance,” Rodgers said. “I got to play better than this for us to win. Whatever it takes. If it’s better checks, if it’s better throws, whatever it is, I got to play better. I will.”
He pointed to a couple of bad throws including missing DK Metcalf on a scramble early in the game for a play that potentially could have been a touchdown. He had another throw to Jonna Smith sail too high leading to an incompletion and then the first interception the ball sailed over Metcalf’s head.
Rodgers also said at times they weren’t getting guys open and when they did, he didn’t make the throw. Head coach Mike Tomlin said protection was part of the issue.
The 41-year-old then put some of it in perspective for a team still in first place, even if that lead over Baltimore has been trimmed to one game.
“We got to bounce back,” Rodgers said. “We got a division opponent next week (hosting Cincinnati), we are 5-4 and ahead by a game in the division.”
“This is part of the season. There are ebbs and flows and ups and downs, we can’t ride the wave. I felt like our energy, and it starts with me, it wasn’t as great on offense. I felt we were struggling a little bit and couldn’t get a play to get going.”
“We had so many three and outs and we hurt ourselves with a couple of penalties and I didn’t play very good at all.”
“I got to play better.”
